Inspiration
Kiki's Delivery Service
1989
Kiki's Delivery service is a coming of age film that explores themes of independence in the working world, particularly geared towards creatives.
I love this film as I feel that there is a self-discovery journey as Kiki explores an unfamiliar world, taking on her hobby as a career, overcoming challenges and burnout as she finds her place in the world.
I think the slow pacing and fantastical setting gives the film a feeling of childhood wonder and whimsy, letting us see through young Kiki's eyes.
Everything Everywhere All At Once
2022
Everything Everywhere all at once is a philospohical movie meant to make audiences reflect on their life and the meaning of it all. This film is intricately woven together to link many themes and genres together, it's a family drama, a comedy, a science fiction and more all at once and yet it works.
The movie is so well thought out that all of these conflicting plot points adds to the sense of clutter that actually is deliberate by the creators, meant to represent the ideas about nihilism versus absurdism, how everything in the world could mean nothing but we should still appreciate and have fun with our lives anyway.
Arcane
2021
Arcane is a series with a high production value, this includes the dialogue, animation, voice acting, pacing and charcters. The story is charcter-driven, centered around a girl name Powder who is trying to deal with her trauma from a young age inside a hostile environment. There are unique visual motifs centered around the characters that help the audience to get a better grasp of our charcter's pyche and emotions.
Scream
1996
Scream is a slasher film that gave life to the dying genre. The self-aware meta commentary is able to put a great spin on what might be a decent film. The story is well-rounded with interesting and engaging twists and plot points centering around the realistic charcters and the mystery of the killer. Additionally, the cinematography is immaculate, building ample tension and horror in spite of the film's more comedic elements.
The Truman Show
1998
The Truman show is a movie that commentates on the horrors of reality TV. It's extremely charcters driven with a focus on Truman's pyche, emotions and motivations. There is a conflict between Truman's percieved reality versus what he is told, making him feel truly alone in this world. The cleverly contructed world seems safe like a utopia but once you realize that Truman is being watched at all times, suddenly all of that security vanishes.
